Enticed by fantasies of the simple life, dreamers are occasionally drawn north by the rugged Scottish landscape. They usually don't last, defeated by the climate or inhospitable locals. But it looks as if Effie Garrand has come to stay. When local constable Hamish Macbeth calls on her after a particularly hideous winter, he's amazed to find the small woman still in residence. Unfortunately, Effie is also quite delusional, having convinced herself -- and everyone else -- that local artist Jock Fleming is in love with her, and that they are engaged. After a huge fight with Jock, Effie is found in the mountains, poisoned by hemlock. Now, it's up to Macbeth, the self-styled "unambitious man," to find the dreamer's killer before any more nightmares unfold. M. C. Beaton's intricate plotting and lively characters are masterfully presented in this unabridged audio version.

I\'d forgotten how great the Hamish McBeth series is. It was good to be back with Priscilla (Hamish leads a doomed love life) and all the other locals, and especially with Hamish, who has a kind and sensible heart, and who solves his mysteries with tenacity and with having a \"wee word\" with suspects and witnesses alike.

I really enjoyed this mystery. I thought I had it figured out (several times actually), and even so I wrong as to who the killer was. That's a good mystery as far as I'm concerned. The narrator is very pleasant to listen to.

This was an uncomplicated, but enjoyable mystery novel, full of local color and interesting, quirky characters. Although the mystery itself was a little predictable, the descriptions of life in a small isolated village were worth the read.

I found the story to be enjoyable. The narrator was good. I liked the quirky, gossipy residents of the Scottish Highlands town. It made me smile.
