Overview

Best-selling author J.A. Jance returns with a tale of kidnapping, murder and psychological drama set against the holiday season in the American Southwest. In this absorbing, brilliantly-crafted mystery, Joanna Brady, a newly-elected sheriff, finds herself trapped in a mirage of shifting facts. Several young women, found dead in various parts of Arizona, have one thing in common: husbands with a history of domestic violence. Police arrest the obvious suspects in each case, gaining confessions each time. These open-and-shut cases help clear court dockets, but they don't begin to dispense justice until Brady suspects a chilling common thread. J.A. Jance is known for her insightful, lightning-fast thrillers that delve deep into the fears of women everywhere. Narrator C.J. Critt perfectly matches Brady's gutsy, warm-hearted personality. In Joanna Brady, Jance has created a charming and determined character who stands alone in the world of police fiction.

I like J.A. Jance because her novels are filled with powerful women, and she uses females as her main characters instead of as romantic interests. She always seems to weave little kids into horrible murders in a way that only makes hers books more interesting, and she can see things from the kids' points of view adding a dash of humor. But again, the denouement has law enforcement doing things in a way that law enforcement simply never would, and the female main character looking the other way and winding up in trouble when you know they would not. But hey, who cares in a book that is such a compelling read? I highly recommend.
