Overview

John Hart creates a literary thriller that is as suspenseful as it is poignant, a riveting murder mystery layered beneath the southern drawl of a humble North Carolina lawyer. When Work Pickens finds his father murdered, the investigation pushes a repressed family history to the surface and he sees his own carefully constructed facade begin to crack. Work's troubled sister, her combative girlfriend, his gold digging socialite wife, and an unrequited lifelong love join a cast of small town characters that create no shortage of drama in this extraordinary, fast-paced suspense novel. Hart's mastery of prose and plot belie his newcomer status as he explores the true heart of a man. An illuminating anatomy of a murder and the ripple effect it produces within a family and a community, The King of Lies is a stunning debut.

Too much concentration on inner feelings and moods; otherwise OK.

Good story, long time getting to it

Wow. This really did end up having a good story to it - the problem was that it took soooo long to get to it that I had started skimming the disk (you know - play a minute of it, then forward to the next segment, and so on.) Basically, the first half could be boiled down to: lawyer's father is found dead; secrets are alluded to; he hates his wife; he drinks a beer; he sees his mistress; he drinks another beer. That pretty much covers about the first 2 disks! But then, it does get better, and a real plot shows up. Altogether - interesting story, eventually, but keep that fast-forward-finger at the ready!

On and on . . .

Good story, but for cryin' out loud GET ON WITH IT. Started to fast forward because it was too much blah blah blah in between pivot points of the story.

Great read. This book kept me interested all throughout the reading. John Hart is a terrific writer. Also, enjoyed The Last Child by him.

I had never read this author before but the plot sounded interesting. The book kept me interested and I liked the writer's style. It did start out a little slow but the pace picked up. I would read this author again!
