The Piano Teacher

  • Book Rating: 4/5

Haunting characters at the onset of WWII have stayed in mind long after finishing this book. Haunting in their desperation, yet still not likeable people. Claire (the piano teacher) is a Brit who finds herself in Hong Kong with her new husband. Socially awkward and lacking in life experience, Claire yearns to become part of a higher class of people and escape her life as it has been. The story is really more about Will and Trudy than Claire. Claire seems more a voyeur than central protagonist. A good read.

This story captured my imagination with a lovely tale or romance and loss set in Hong Kong during WWII. Not only were the characters captivating but also the backdrop of a Japanese-occupied war torn country was both fascinating and heartbreaking. This book will stay with me for a long time.
